" Between Folds is a project made in 2021. This is one of the tests for the original video exhibited in and/and/and—NSCAD MFA Group Show. In this project, the paper treated with sensitizer was folded 128 times with replicated form, then exposed to the sun to reveal the shapes of the fold, as well as the pattern of the shade. To explore the internal relationship between shapes, the original piece was scanned and divided into numerous segments according to the baseline produced during folding, and then set into a sequence of video frames. When a story is being told, it is manipulated with the ideology and techniques. Some parts of the material of story-telling are emphasized while others are weakened or cancelled. This piece was an experiment in the structure of narrative. It used the gesture of unfolding in metaphor to reveal the full aspect of an event. By showing both the hidden and the exposed in a creative activity, Between Folds assembled a structure of storytelling that communicates the dominant and the invisible synchronously, which was considered as the narrative without any manipulation. Actually, this effort of cancelling manipulation is invalid. It shows us that the encounter of narrative is always planed. Eventually, this piece asked a question about morality: to what extend can we manipulate a narrative and still maintain the insight of truth? "
110000 is the postal code of Shenyang, which is the location where this work was made. As an organism, space is also the physical evidence of experience. Man is the subject and object of experience. When we build, we are inspired by the passion of the march; When we discard, we turn back and ignore the decaying scene. Does the abandonment of space also reflect a certain abandonment and betrayal of experience, a desire to reset, or is it abandonment and betrayal of ourselves?
Yifan Liu was born in China and currently lives and works in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. She obtained her BA with a major in cinematography at LAFA (Luxun Academy of Fine Arts) in 2016, and she is currently an MFA candidate at NSCAD.Yifan Liu is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker concerned with the gesture and power in grand narratives, and the interaction between the power and the embodied experiences of individuals. Rather than questioning the power relationship in grand narratives, she invites randomness into her practice to challenge its territory. Meanwhile, she navigates herself through the experiment of materials and the spaces to contemplate the interaction and vitality of art.
