Don't Be Afraid, My Child

" I am investigating complex and conflicting emotions, major events, and my life narrative through the use of world building and imagined, fantasy landscapes that translate and interpret the places in my mind. Through the use of large scale panorama (8’ x 30’), I walk the audience through different zones and regions that represent, reflect upon, and question my past lived experiences. This idea comes from wishing that I had someone to walk alongside my younger self through the trials and tribulations of life. I use a continuous sheet of raw canvas, primed with clear gesso as my foundation in order to imitate a scroll (a nod to my Chinese heritage) and conserve the raw state of the textile. The painting starts with a serene and pure landscape drawn using graphite and charcoal to represent a quiet and nurturing childhood.As the painting and story progresses, there is a shift to pastels, watercolor, acrylic paint, and other mediums that show my progress and enrichment both in my artistic journey, and outside of it. The narrative becomes more whimsical, colorful, and complex as time passes and the painting approaches the “now.” Other than traditional landmarks such as trees, mountains, buildings, and different atmospheres, I also chose to express my kinship and experience with trauma through the use of blob-like creatures; these little “friends” are my way of processing and investigating my traumatic experiences and rearticulate its complex, comforting presence. Through the use of color, blending, brush strokes, and atmosphere, I try to create a scene that conveys personal emotions and narratives with graphic sensitivity and technical mark-making applications effectively."

Justina Yu
Justina Yu (she/her) is a Toronto-based cross-disciplinary visual artist and martial artist with over 15 years of experience in both fields. Born in 2000 in North York, Ontario to parents of Chinese descent, she primarily works in drawing (pencil and ink) and painting (acrylic and oil), but experiments with areas of sculpture, installation and animation as well. In addition to pursuing a career in fine arts, Justina has been a competitive Taekwondo athlete with over 11 years of competition experience ranging from local to international level tournaments.
With a BFA in Drawing & Painting and a Minor in Art History, Justina ultimately plans to pursue a Master of Art Conservation, which is her career goal in addition to keeping up a personal studio practice. Her work currently focuses around the questions, "What does it mean to be Justina Yu?" and "what's going on up there?" Many of her pieces surround the topic of her emotional and psychological journey in relation to family ecosystems and career as an international level competitive athlete. Through her art, Justina aims to show audiences how she connects to the world through her diverse friendships, training, as well as her experiences with synesthesia.

About the exhibition
Art is a language that doesn’t need translation. For a long time, art has played an important role in the communication between China and other countries. In the context of economic globalization, cultures from all over the world collide and fuse with each other, forming a multi-cultural network. Chinese culture and various cultures of other countries meet here, forming a strong and diverse artistic atmosphere As globalization makes the cultural and artistic exchanges between countries more frequent and more closely connected, the optimization of the international artistic ecological environment also provides new opportunities for the evolution of art. Art is enriched by exchanges and mutual learning; the development of art requires international exchanges and cooperation, the active participation of artists from all countries, the sharing of ideas, the collision of hearts and the blending of emotions.This initiative is hosted by the Sino-Canada Alliance of Arts and Culture,York University Centre for Asian Research, Sensorium: Centre for Digital Arts and Technology, the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts gallery, and the School of Visual Communication Design of LAFA, with funds from the Canada-China Initiative Grant from York Centre for Asian Research, and Double first-class project approved by Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition showcases outstanding works of art by young artists from all over the world, strengthens exchanges between artists from all over the world, and promotes the "beauty of each other and the beauty of the other" in Chinese and foreign cultures. By supporting art exchange activities between international artists , promoting the understanding of the different national cultures, and breaking through group and language barriers, we aim to achieve more commonality between people, creating communication, understanding,and fusion,thereby further optimizing the ecological environment,new opportunities for the artistic.This exhibition shows the vitality of the interdependence and common development of Chinese culture and the world civilization, promotes the pace of Chinese art to the world, and has a positive impact on promoting the inheritance and development of Chinese culture and strengthening the international exchange of Chinese culture. After the exhibition committee’s review, a total of 47 artists from 43 regions in the world have been selected into the "Crossing Time Zones·2022 China-Canada-Australia Emerging Artists Communication Exhibition". We will introduce the participating artists issue by issue, welcome your attention and subscription.
